289: LOOK HOMEWARD ASGARDIAN
MARVEL ALL-COLOUR COMICS, NOVEMBER 1979
ISSUE DETAILS: WHEN DR. DONALD BLAKE STRIKES HIS WOODEN WALKING-STICK UPON THE GROUND,
IT BECOMES THE MYSTIC HAMMER MJOLNIR – AND THE LAME PHYSICIAN IS TRANSFORMED
INTO THE NORSE GOD OF THUNDER, MASTER OF THE STORM, LORD OF THE LIVING
LIGHTNING – AND HEIR TO THE THRONE OF ETERNAL ASGARD…THE MIGHTY THOR!
Issue 289 of the first volume of Marvel’s flagship Thor comic, also known as The Mighty Thor, published in November
1979 and featuring a story entitled Look
Homeward Asgardian. The creative team for the issue was as follows...
The story is spread across 17 pages with
full colour artwork throughout. The other contents include BULLPEN BULLETIN
(Stan Lee’s soapbox and news about upcoming Marvel releases, etc.), THE HAMMER
STRIKES (a letters page) and numerous adverts of varying sizes with great
nostalgia value (including a full page comic strip advert for Hostess Twinkies
Cakes starring the Captain Marvel and entitled CAPTAIN VS. PROFESSOR SNEER).
The comic meets the criteria
for a Fine+ grading, though this hasn’t been professionally ratified. There is
some foxing on the white areas of the cover, along with some minor creasing, and
a blue ink stain along the edge of the pages in the bottom left-hand corner,
but no other significant defects. There are no missing pages, no marks or folds
inside, and the colours are bright and free of discoluration.
Thor comics of this vintage
are becoming increasingly rare, so at the low price, this is a bargain not to
be missed. I have taken some photos to show what a nice item it is, but these
really don’t do it justice. Please see my other listings for more vintage
comics and memorabilia (including other issues of The Mighty Thor).
CHARACTER INFORMATION: Leaping from the legends of Norse mythology, the
Asgardian God of Thunder, Thor Odinson, is the son of Odin the All-Father and
Jord, Elder Goddess and spirit of the Earth. He frequently stands alongside the
Avengers in the defense of the people of Midgard (Earth), often against the
schemes of his adopted brother Loki.
