Doctrines held by the
Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
Up
for sale is the 1893 publication by the Society of Friends (Quakers) that
describes their doctrines of belief at that time. It is Summary
of Christian Doctrines as Held by the Religious Society of Friends, by
Samuel M. Janney. Eighth Edition. Published by Friends’ Book Association,
Philadelphia, 1893. This textured ‘cardstock’
covered book (not hardbound) is 64 pages long, and measures 3⅞ inches by nearly
5½ inches. This book remains tightly
bound and is in good condition throughout, although the cover does have various
discolorations (reflecting its age). It
is unmarked except for the gift inscription on the front flyleaf (see photo).
This
book presents an overview of Christian doctrines as understood by the Society
of Friends in 1893; I do not know if their system of beliefs has changed any
since that time. While having grown up in
a part of Pennsylvania not far from areas with Friends (Quakers), I had not has
a good overview on their theology. So
this past week I read through this book to learn their system of beliefs, and
learned that it melds well with their lifestyles, but does not conform well with
historic Protestant beliefs (see a few text pages in the photos). It was interesting that in this book Mr.
Janney did quote notable people such as William Penn and George Fox (with sections
in this book largely based on George Fox’s doctrinal understandings).
