The Raleigh catalogues didn’t feature the roadster with the double top tube by this point in 1932. In fact, having been back through the catalogues to the 1910s it seems they were always a special order item from Raleigh. The ‘Police Model’ listed in the 1932 catalogue was a ‘X’ frame example built up with similar fittings to this roadster. The model here is essentially an ‘All Weather Popular’ with an extra 2 inches and another brace tube. It’s quite an impressive machine with, all original features are far as I can see. Both the Sturmey Archer KB and LB hubs model numbers end with 2 corresponding with the frame number making it a 1932 model year bicycle. The rims have some traces of the painted centre line, but of course there is plenty of surface pitting on them. The tires are later replacements and make the bicycle very usable and really the only thing that could do with replacement is the grips, which are quite tired. The brakes are unusual, being rod into drums but I have to say they work very well from my limited riding on the machine. The rear hub also shifts very neatly between all three gears with little fuss, making it a joy to use. There is a nice period Lucas Bell along with a 3 1/2" ‘King of The Road’ Lamp that is not wired into anything at present. The chrome plating on the handlebars and stem is good for the bikes age along with the cranks and hubs which will clean up very nicely. The Brooks B90/3 is in really good shape, some cracking to the leather surface but not compromised in any way and very comfortable once you get up there. There is an additional rear pannier rack and the Raleigh branded pedals spin very well with both dust caps present. The full mudguards and chainguard made this a very usable all year-round machine for the force. You can see the remains of the original ‘Police model’ decal on the back of the lower head lug and quite a lot of the original paint and red lining is still intact. It will polish up very nicely and with a good wax should glisten again. These large roadsters are getting very hard to find in this sort of original condition. When you consider it’s a 92 year old bicycle it is in remarkably good shape and will make a lovely ride for any wannabe bobby on the beat.

Complete bikes are checked over, and given a service if required, so they are working as they should and any issues will be listed so you the buyer can assess your purchase.
