TB , der Gründer des heute wohl bekanntesten Mantelherstellers der Welt, war ursprünglich für hochwertige Outdoor-Kleidung und Textilien bekannt, die den Ansprüchen von Ingenieuren, Sportlern und Abenteurern genügen sollten. Eine seiner patentierten Erfindungen war ein festes Baumwollgewebe, das auf natürliche Art und Weise wasserdicht war: Gabardine. In dessen Anfangszeit um 1870 wurden daraus unter anderem Zelte gefertigt, die Roald Amundsen bei der Eroberung des Südpols wertvolle Dienste leisteten. Bald schon wurde das britische Militär auf diesen Vorläufer heutiger Funktionsgewebe aufmerksam und bestellte bei Burberry Mäntel für seine Truppen, die sie in den Gefechten des Ersten Weltkrieges tragen sollten. Nachdem die Mäntel sich als wasserabweisende, wärmende Kleidungsstücke bewährt hatten, trugen die Soldaten sie nach Kriegsende auch im zivilen Leben und ebneten ihnen so den Weg in die alltägliche Garderobe.
