Very rare and fascinating "c1928 Wild West "Heros and Villains" Illustrated Collector Card - Arkansas Tom (Roy Daugherty) - Outlaw." The artist is H. O. Rawson, from Worchester, Massachusetts. He was a well known illustrator in lots of literary genres, but he had a real penchant for Wild West heroes and scenes. Mr. Rawson started illustrating these cards beginning in the early 1920's, and he produced several cards per year until he covered all the Western Celebrities. He liked to hide his signature within the drawing on the front of each of his cards. Sometimes he dated them, and sometimes not. Look closely at the photo to see if you can find it. These illustrated cards are part of a series of "Heros and Villains of the Wild West," which we will be offering over the next several weeks. This card is printed on a card stock. Legendary characters of the Wild West have provided drama for Books, Silent Movies and Talkies, Comic Books, TV shows, Roll Playing and Video Games, and more since the 1870 onward. A lot of people became famous; their names well-known; heros and gun-slingers alike. Sometimes in the Wild West a person would be both a hero AND a villain. We'll give you the information, and you can decide for yourself. This wonderful collector card for "Arkansas Tom" measures 5-1/2" X 4-1/4" (14 cm. X 10.75 cm.) It is in excellent condition. All of the corners are a tad bumped, and there are a couple small instances of mild foxing. However but the surface, and edges in great condition, both in front and in back. The printing is dark and vibrant. The sheet is clean and crisp with very little age toning. Please see the photos above. So, the history: Roy Daugherty, also known as Arkansas Tom Jones, (1870 - 1924) was an American outlaw of the Old West, and a member of the Wild Bunch gang, led by Bill Doolin. He was the longest lived, as well as the last surviving member of the gang. Born into a staunchly religious family in Missouri, his two brothers became preachers. However, Daugherty rebelled, and left Missouri for Oklahoma Territory at only 14 years of age. He called himself "Arkansas Tom Jones", claiming to have been from there. For a number of years he worked as a cowboy, which was how he met Bill Doolin. He joined Doolin's gang around 1892. He was involved in several robberies, but was one of the first of the gang to fall, being captured after the Battle in Ingalls, Oklahoma in 1893. He killed Deputy Marshal Thomas Hueston during that shootout, and was captured after Deputy Marshal Jim Masterson threw dynamite into where Jones was making his stand, stunning him. Daugherty was sentenced to fifty years in prison, but due to his two preacher brothers campaigning on his behalf, he was paroled in 1910. For two years he ran a restaurant in Oklahoma, but became bored and moved to Hollywood, California, hoping to act in western films. However, that did not work out, and he robbed a bank in 1917 and was again captured. Released in 1921, he robbed another bank in Missouri He remained on the run from law enforcement until tracked to Joplin, Missouri and killed during a gunfight by Joplin Police Detective "Len" Vandeventer on August 16, 1924.
