On the morning of his one hundred and eleventh birthday, the eccentric master of Bag End cowers amid a jumble of paper and books in his study, his pen unfocused as he scratches out his memoirs.
"Miraculously healthy for one of his advanced years, Bilbo Baggins is no ordinary Hobbit. He may be a small person, but his was a long and storied life, and he pursues his self-proclaimed duty to record it in every detail with furious fervor.
Gossip and disapproval swirl among the respectable citizens of Hobbiton regarding the old bachelor. "Entertains the Dwarves," they murmur under furrowed eyebrows. ""He talks to Elves and pairs up with Wizards." Wide-eyed children cling to tales of Bilbo's adventures, while parents fidget and shake their heads, suppressing "unhealthy curiosity" while NOT listening with a attentive ear. "That old Bilbo isn't right in the head; too much of a Took," they proclaim a little too loudly. “But there is gold in Bag End,” they whisper to each other with furtive glances, “And other secrets, too.”
Bilbo laughs at the provincial mutterings of his neighbors and loves them all the same. They will never understand what he saw, but some of them show promise. It is for Bilbo's young cousin, Frodo, and for some other Hobbits like him, that he is compelled to write. Age creeps upon Bilbo, little by little, and that Tookishness in his blood stirs melancholy; thoughts of distant mountains and distant friends. His mind is set; plans are set. Now all he needs is time to finish what he started, if only they would stop ringing the bell!"
