Shinobu Matsumura, a leading animal sculptor, has created a three-dimensional version of the African elephant, which is the largest herbivore among existing terrestrial mammals and lives in various places such as savannahs, rainforests, deserts, and highlands. The new manufacturing method has made it possible to mass-produce items that are faithful to the original model, which was impossible with conventional soft vinyl molding, such as the sharply undulating body lines and fine, deep wrinkles molded into the nose and body surface. Subtle painting expressions that look like a one-off work, such as the brown body color due to sand bathing, are also realized in mass-produced products.
