I've seen many pieces like this, but this one is unique with its emphasis on the beard and mouth—a rare expression indeed. This fish ornament is called a 'kaipan.' It's a wooden ritual instrument specific to temples of the Ōbaku Zen sect, used to signal the time. It was introduced to Japan by the Zen master Ingen during his travels. Over time, it evolved into what is commonly known as a 'mokugyo'.
