This is an authentic " St. Bernard dog " brandy barrel dating back to the 19th/ 18th century or possibly even earlier??  this is my estimate judging by the style of construction and the hand forged fittings but please judge the age for yourself from the photos before bidding. It is a beautiful piece of antique treen that would make a wonderful addition to any collection. The barrel is made of wood and metal and is inscribed with the maker/owners marks of at least 3 possibly 4 previous hands and is typical of the style/  features of early blacksmithing. The barrel is in excellent condition and has a well-preserved ,rich patina which reflects many years of age  . It is an original piece and not a reproduction. This antique box is perfect for displaying as a work of art.Tie cord long gone but would be easy to replace with something appropriate if you wish. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own a piece of history .                                             Additional info received & greatfully  appreciated    this may be an early farming implement known as a  COSTREL used to contain drinks and taken into the feilds and that the ST BERNARD dog story is in fact a victorian construction
