A rare jacketed copy of this novel of pioneers and Native Americans, set in Oregon. ''The story deals with the travels of a young botanist who starts from Sauvies Island in 1854 in search of a white girl who he has learned is living with an Indian tribe. Ward of the Redskins is the second novel by Sheba May (Childs) Hargreaves (1882-1960), which followed her acclaimed work, The Cabin at the Trail's End. Hargreaves was born in The Dalles, grew up near the Warm Springs Reservation and Prineville, was educated at the Oregon State Normal School at Monmouth, and worked as a teacher. She lived in Portland for many years. Her papers are held at the University of Oregon Library's Special Collections and Archives.
