Eucalyptus macrocarpa
MOTTLECAH - AUSTRALIAN NATIVE MALLEE
30 Seeds
Eucalyptus macrocarpa is a small native mallee tree with large flowers, silver green foliage and large gumnuts with a silver, powdery coating. This dense, mallee-type tree has the largest of all the eucalypt flowers, it's blooms are a spectacular red to pink-red with a diameter of 10cm. Flowering occurs from early spring to mid summer and the gumnuts which follow the flowers are also an interesting feature of the tree, being very large with a powdery grey covering.
As a species native to relatively dry areas, E.macrocarpa is best suited to cultivation in climates which have a dry summer. It has been grown in sub tropical districts but cannot be regarded as reliable in those areas. It prefers well-drained soil, but tolerates sandy and poor soils. Position in a full sun or part shade location, and is coastal, frost and drought tolerant.
The highly ornamental look and contrast foliage of this plant makes it an ideal as a feature tree and it is also loved by fauna such as nectar-loving honeyeaters.
Common Name.
Mudelka; Rose of the West.
Germination Tips: Sow seed in a seed-raising mix just below the surface. Soaking seeds for 24 hours can help soften the seed coat and encourage germination. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days.
