PAST PERFECT started
life more than ten years ago (November 2008) as reviews from the floor
of 64. Its remit was to review the very earliest of stories from Marvel Comics,
but to do so through the popular British black-and-white reprint weeklies Fantastic and Terrific,
two of the titles in the Power Comics range. These featured: Thor, X-Men, Iron
Man, Sub-Mariner, Avengers, Dr Strange, Giant-Man and the Wasp, Tales of the
Watcher, and the Hulk. UK-created stories of special security agent Don Starr
and the Missing Link (later Johnny Future) provided back-up.
From issue No.10,
reviews of Fantastic and Terrific alternated in each issue, Fantastic in odd
numbered issues, Terrific in even numbered ones.
Issue No.17 began a new
feature called “Not Quite Meanwhile” which looked at other fantasy-related
material outside the Marvel Universe.
This became sufficiently
popular that with issue No.42 the magazine expanded its remit to cover more
than just the Power Comics. To mark this change, the title of the magazine
became PAST PERFECT. The page count now went up to an average of 28 pages.
With issue No.63, TV
Century 21 joined the line-up on a regular basis, with a single issue of
the famous comic being reviewed every month.
From 94 onwards it now
came out three times a month, with each of the three issues covering different
material and with a different featured item: the first featured TV21,
the second The Mighty World of Marvel (from issue No.1), and
the third the Power Comics. The page count was now 20 to 24 pages on average
(occasionally straying into the 30s).
From issue No.134
onwards, the magazine became PAST PERFECT MONTHLY, averaging 80 pages per
issue, and gathering together all the various elements from the
three-times-a-month days. It continues in that format to this day.
