This brilliant 1950s Susan Gail accordion handbag is extremely hard to find!

Made by Susan Gail of New York City, a bag designer from the 1940s - 1970s, the bag is made of calf leather utilizing her original accordion design with a number of folds that, in combination with an elongated hinged frame, allows for wide expansion of the purse.

Some historians have suggested that her accordion designs inspired some Hermes designs, as her design can be found as early as the 1940s prior to Hermes’s productions. The hardware is brass with a beautiful stylized clasp. There is an article on some of Susan Gail’s unique designs in The Vintage Traveler from July 2018.
