Terry (Steve Guttenberg) is having an affair with Sylvia (Isabelle Huppert), his boss's wife. One night, standing at Terry's window, Sylvia witnesses a young woman being attacked and manages to scare the attacker off. But when another woman's body is found nearby, the couple find the only way to keep their affair a secret, is for Terry to give evidence in Sylvia's place. However, when the police discover that he is lying and begin to suspect him of the murder, he finds himself trapped, unable to tell the truth and unable to evade suspicion.
