This is a fascinating and whimsical Vintage Mid Century Modern Surrealist Circus Oil Painting on canvas, by mid-century California Modernist painter, Lyn Howley. This artwork depicts the portraits of two performers in a circus setting. A majestic blue horse is visible on the left, while a young and plucky black-haired girl, wearing a fantastical conical hat, reminiscent of a knight's jousting weapon, is visible on the right, smiling directly at the viewer. In the background is a large arena, and multitudes of spectators in their seats. Above them are the folds of a large circus tent. Signed vertically: "Lyn Howley" at the lower right edge. Additionally, this painting is titled: "Performers" on the verso of the canvas. This piece likely dates to the 1950's. Approximately 21 1/8 x 25 1/8 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 14 x 18 1/8 inches. Very good condition for age, with some light scuffing and edge wear to the original period vintage wood frame. Acquired in Pasadena, California.
