Betjemann & Sons London Crystal Glass Inkwell Approx. 1880

Baccarat crystal glass inkwell with wooden shelf, silver-plated brass lid, stamped twice: Patent 11049, Betjemann's (see photos). Inkwell dimensions: approx. 29x23x11cm. Height of the wooden shelf: approx. 3.5cm. Crystal glass insert: approx. 11 x 8.8 x 8.7cm. Weight: 1,032 grams. Good used condition, age-related signs of wear (see photos)

Betjemann & Sons – George Betjemann and his two sons George William Betjemann and John Betjemann. 
Innovative joinery and box makers who had their own Betjemann patent mechanisms. 
The company was based in London and consisted of the 
Mid-19th century Century until the late 1930s. 
They created high-quality jewelry boxes with elaborate opening mechanisms. 
They were also known for the “Betjemann Tantalus”. A Tantulus is a small wooden cupboard 
with two or three decanters. The special thing about the “Betjemann Tantulas” was that 
that they had a lock and a key. 
This meant it could still be displayed for all to see, 
However, unauthorized persons were prevented from drinking the contents. 
Other items included patent book slides, patent decanters, 
Inkwells and cigarette packs.
