Caring for your Mealworms:
A one thousand count bulk of mealworms can be kept in a large plastic container, with air holes in the top. You should cover the mealworms with a thick layer of wheat middling, oat meal, or Fluker's mealworm bedding to provide bedding and a food source. Mealworms are relatively easy to keep and provide excellent nutrition for your pets. Upon arrival, place them in a refrigerator set at 45°F until ready for use. When you are ready to use them, remove the desired amount and leave at room temperature until they become active, roughly 24 hours before feeding to your animal. If you plan to keep the mealworms for longer than two weeks, remove them from the refrigerator and let them become active. Once they become active, place a slice of potato on the top of the bedding to provide moisture, and let them sit for 24 hours. Then, place them back in the refrigerator.
Common FAQ's
A. Our mealworms are shipped in regular boxes and therefore need to be transferred to a plastic container with small holes. Any kind of bran or meal should be added to the plastic container for bedding and food. They can be kept for weeks at 40 - 50 degrees F in the refrigerator. Lower temperatures can kill them. They will be slow moving when they are in the fridge. About every two weeks or so, pull the container out of the fridge, add a few small chunks of carrot or potato, which they will consume as a source of moisture. At the end of the day, remove any remaining carrot or potato, replace the cover, and put them back in the fridge. When buying mealworms, make it your last stop on the way home. Leaving mealworms in a warm or hot car for hours can kill them. You can get a lot of enjoyment from watching birds eat mealworms, and the mealworms are quite a treat for the birds!
