Please read the entire description and inspect all the photographs before bidding on this item.

This listing is for a US Navy Bureau of Navigation Mark II sextant produced during WWII.  The serial number is 16502-1943, and it was placed into service August 8, 1944.  The serial numbers on the sextant, the identifying plaque on the box, and the Inspection Certificate all match.  (Note that the Inspection Certificate has water damage and is only marginally legible. It is also no longer glued to the lid.)

The following items are included:
1. The sextant with its telescope.
2. Two Millers Falls 331-2" screwdrivers. (One screwdriver is shorter than the other and may have been modified.)
3. Bronze thumbscrew-style adjusting tool.
4. Two spare mirrors.
5. Mahogany plywood box with all hardware and the key to the lock.
6. A "Certificate of Eccentricity" (Inspection Certificate) dated 8/8/1944.
8. A 30+ page manual covering maintenance and overhaul specific to the USN Mark II sextant.  (A sample page is shown in the last photo.)

The sextant arm and its micrometer mechanism operate smoothly and the arm moves throughout its range without binding.  The installed index mirror is in good condition, but the horizon mirror (the half-silvered mirror) shows deterioration.  (There are spares for both mirrors but they aren't in good condition.)  The seven colored filters are complete and undamaged.  There is light corrosion around the edges of each filter.

The black anodizing on the frame and telescope shows some blemishes and wear but no functional damage.  The bronze components show some wear.

The telescope optics are clear and the focusing ring rotates smoothly.

The box has some age related wear, and stains from what is likely water/moisture exposure.  There is no missing veneer.  It has some scratches, mostly on the top and bottom but none are severe.  All six sides of the box are shown in the photos so you can evaluate its condition.

All in all this is a complete and nice, if not perfect, WWII vintage sextant, suitable for prominent display.

Shipping charges are actual costs based on weight and size.  The sextant will be VERY carefully packed.  Local pickup available with no shipping cost.

I've tried to be complete and to disclose all problems, but I may have missed something.  Please check out all the pictures and do not hesitate to ask about anything.
