Allium ursinum - Wild Garlic
Wild garlic is a bulbous early flowering perennial with a distinctive and pungent garlicky smell, blooming usually between early/mid spring to early summer. Wild garlic is an excellent companion plant in the garden, growing well with most plants and improving their health and their ability to resist diseases.
(Though not to be grown with plants belonging to the pea and bean family)
- Flowering season: April - June
- Growth from 6-20 inches in height (15-50cm)
- Stunning when planted in drifts
Wild Garlic may be grown for both ornamental and culinary uses.
All parts of this plant are edible in quantity when it is in season (flower, seed, stem, leaves and bulb/root).
- Example of culinary uses: Fresh leaves in salads, eaten with soft cheese, flavouring in soups, stews etc, can be used as spinach, great in pesto and with pasta
- Medicinal uses include: treatment for digestive problems, rheumatism, high blood pressure and asthma; with anti inflammatory, anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti oxidant properties.
As we should appreciate, an alternative survival strategy taken by many plants is for their foliage to die back; the plant persists to spend the winter below the ground as seed or bulb. Bulb plants respond to the onset of warmth with rapid growth - Wild Garlic is testament to this - producing extensive carpets of green during the first signs of spring.
Wild Garlic is deciduous, according to wild garlic's natural growth cycle the foliage/leaves will fall back every year, which usually occurs from mid-May up to June.
Wild garlic provided from the mid-May onward will be supplied as bulbs only for next season.
Foliage/leaves will be sent out with bulbs when in season; however, foliage provided with the bulbs does not form part of the sale. We package our bulbs and foliage/seeds well, with care for transit.
Some of our display pictures show plants in their mature state. Wild garlic bulbs sent will vary in size and weight. Foliage may include leaves that have yellowed naturally, according to season.
