Grateful Dead " 30 Trips Around The Sun " Set - originally released in 2015 in direct conjunction with the much anticipated " 50-Years ! Celebration of The Grateful Dead " ( 1965 - 2015 ) ... GD 50 !!! And, to honor this Landmark ! Rock & Roll Achievement - Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino originally released a " 30-Years ! " Box Set - to rightfully ' Commemorate ' " '65 " ! And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream ! " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, as for " This ! " 30 Trips " 1986 " ( Cal Expo !! ) 3-CD Set selection offered here ... it's the Band at " Cal Expo !!! ". Oh wait - let me just " Say-That ! Again " ... as it's the Band ! - in the Mid-'80's !! ( in 1986 ! ) - just " Rockin' ! " ... CAL EXPO !!!!! Ha ! - and as if you can't already-tell - I ( like most ' All ' Dead Fans ) ... just Loved ! the Good Ol' Cal Expo !!! Truly one-of - if not really " The-Last " Perfectly-Amazing ! Grateful Dead " Venue " to see the Band Outdoors ! - and yeah ... right in the " California Sunshine !!! ". As at least for me myself - I never got rained-on at an Expo Show ! And, maybe too - more ' specifically ' put - Cal Expo was actually ' The-Last ' Perfectly-Amazing ! Grateful Dead " General Admission ! " Venue to see the Band Outdoors !! As by the time 1989 " Come & Gone " ( My~Oh-My ! ) ... it was pretty much down to say like, hmmm ... maybe Cal Expo, Shoreline, Deer Creek, Pine Knob, Star Lake ? - as far as the really much-more Intimate & Special places go. With, some maybe wanting to throw the Sam Boyd ! in there too. But, my point being ... all of the ones that follow Cal Expo here on this ' short-list ' were all " Reserved Seating " Venues - and, with most all of them too ... you could Mail Order GDTS on the " 1st Day " - and might very-realistically be " Shut-Out " - with that Grateful " Dreadful " one-sheet - with that ' Fatal ' square-box ' checked ' ... " Sold Out ! ". But, at Expo on the other hand - it just Felt Like " Family ! " there - really more than any other Outdoor Venue I can think of, off-hand. As here-too is the ' thing ' with Cal Expo ... as it felt that no matter where you were standing, or sitting ( with it " All G.A. " ) - it just literally ' felt ' ( & looked ! ) like the Band was standing up no-higher than You ! And, the Real-Cool & Colorful ! ( Legendary ) " Water Slide ! " right-behind the Stage ! was always pretty-darn ' Awesome ! ' too ... certainly just ' adding ' a little more to the Collective " Fun !! ". Just a Sweet ! ... " Sweet !!! " Outdoor Venue to see the Band in say the ' later ' years - and they were lucky enough to " Rock-It-Out ! " in 1984 ( 2-shows ) - 1986 ( 2-Shows ) - 1989 ( 3-Shows ) - 1990 ( 2-Shows ) - 1991 ( 3-Shows ) - 1992 ( 3-Shows ) - 1993 ( 3-Shows ) - 1994 ( 3-Shows ). And, it should also be noted here too - just to ' Furthur ' hammer-home this point about Cal Expo being " Special " ... arguably ( and, kind of ' unarguably ! ' ) - the Grateful Dead played a few of their Best-Shows " Ever ! " at Expo during the 1993 run ( with 5/26/93 & 5/27/93 ) coming very-quickly to my mind. Which, is kind of ' unbelievable ' really - and, also tends to defy-all-odds ( especially in competition with say - '84, or '89, or '90, or even '91 for that matter ) - but, it most-definitely " Happened ". And, I can vouch for it too - as I caught that entire '93 run I'm referring to here. And, if you want to even look-into-it a " Little Bit More ! " ( Ha ! ) - then ... I'd ' Most-Definitely ! ' recommend checking out the " Road Trips Cal Expo '93 Vol. 2 No. 4 " 3-CD Set ! With my ' Direct-Point ' being here ... with the kind of strange, anticipatory & flat-out " Awesome ! " ( Magical !! ) Energy that went on between the Band ! & the Fans ! at Cal Expo !!? ... almost " Anything " could-happen ! And, often-did too ... on a ' number ' of these Cal Expo runs between 1984 through 1994. And, again - just to verify for you ( ha ! ) - yep, as I have listened to them all - were at some in person, and many ( most ) of them - I've listened to ' numerous ! ' times - time & time & time(s!) again !! With, honestly - the '94 run being the only one that I tend to stay clear of myself - since, when I listened to that one & also talked to Tour Friends at the time ... those ( being from '94 ) were a little on the sad-side, just to be completely honest. Which, even then was kind of strange still ! - as '94 Seattle " Rocked ! " - '94 Autzen " Rocked ! " - and '94 Oakland " Beyond-Rocked !! " - and, with This-One ( Oaktown ! ) I'm not-even using " 1994 Standards " to judge ' It ' - as heck ... it was just an All-Time G.D. Live " Smoker !!! " of a run. And, much-like Cal Expo '93 ! really, now come to think of it. But, as-for This ! Cal Expo 5/3/86 Show !!!?!!! ... " Yes !!! ". As there really just ought to be some-kind of G.D. " Release-Series " that just-releases ... '80's Dead Shows !! I mean ... it's just such a different ' Sport ' all-together, and definitely one that I enjoy the Most ! overall. And, interestingly enough - there is a pretty-big ( & pretty-neat ) shall I say " Correlation " between the 1986 & 1988 releases inside this " 30-Trips Series ! ". As to put it bluntly ... 7/2/88 ( Oxford Plains, ME ) has a much-better Set List " On-Paper " - but, regardless ... 7/3/88 Oxford Plains !! ' instead ' got the Call of " 30-Trips " Duty ! Which, yes ... I-Loved ! And, here for " 1986 ?!? " - Yes-Indeed !! ... as we've got it ' Again ! ' - as while 5/4/86 Cal Expo plainly ( & clearly ) ' Beats ' 5/3/86 on the " Set List " Head-to-Head ' comparison ' ( by a long-shot ) ... regardless of-it - 5/3/86 Cal Expo ! -- the Saturday Night Show ( without a " Saturday Night ! " ) got the " 30-Trips " Call !!! And, I mean ... if you are an '80's Dead ahhh ... " Freak ? " - like say ... " Me ?! " - then you too are already tongue-in-cheek & grinning ear-to-ear on 5/3/86 Expo ! " Getting-The-Call !! ". Just ... " So-Rad !! " - Ha ! As let's put it this-way ... 5/4/86 ( the ' Sunday ' Expo Show - with a " One More Saturday Night " Opener ! ) delivered yes - the " One More Saturday Night ! " - the 1/2 Step Mississippi ! - The Rooster ! - Candyman ! - and ... the China !! > Rider !!! in the 7/8 spot(s) respectively - as the Set I ' Closer ' !! And, then for Set II ?? ... Gimmie Some Lovin' ! > Playin' ! > Drums/Space > Uncle John's Band ! > Playin' ! > Miracle ! ... Good Lovin' ! ... with a Box Of Rain !! " Encore " ! But, my fellow Dead Fans ... even with ' all ' of that said ... May 3rd, 1986 ( 5/3/1986 ) got the " 30-Trips " Call !! - instead of even 5/4/86 Cal Expo ! - which, rest assured & trust me ... as That ! means a-lot. As the fact of the matter is ... 5/3/86 is ( much like 7/2/88 vs. 7/3/88 Oxford Plains, ME ) has small, medium & large-sized " Spikes " of ' Moments-Of-Magic ! ' pretty much ' Everywhere ' throughout this Show - where like ' every ' Band Member was trying to " Have a Throw " at Igniting-the-Fire !! - but, it never really ' caught ' - at least " All-At-Once ". So, you know ... instead of the Boys ' finding-it ' mutually, and then putting the Cadillac on " Coast " down the freeway - they kept choppin' & sluggin' away at ... kinda like turning over every-stone ! And, as a result ... at least to me & my Deadhead ears & personal-taste ... this 5/3/86 Show is just " Awesome !!! ". Is it ' Historic ? ' - I wouldn't really say so. And, if you ask if it's ' Impressive ' - I'm not sure I'd really call it ' that ' either ?? But, what it is ... is " Grate !!! " - and it's the Band really just-before the ' end ' of the " Pre" RFK Summer Tour '86 Era ( the last-shows before Garcia's Illness ). But, even with ' That ' said ... Go & Really-Listen to 7/13/89 Jerry~Garcia !!! ... " Pure-Fire !! ". And so ... here's really how this-here little ditty of a 5/3/86 Dead-Show " Goes ! " >>> Bobby Weir just " Nailing !! " the 1st ' Race Is On ! ' played by the Band since 1981 !! - catching that ' Dead-Heat ' straight out of the ' Cold Rain ' Show-Opener called by Jerry. Then, Jerry's like " Alright-Weir ! " - Gotcha !! ... and pulls for the T.L.E.O. ! ( Kindly ! ) - and then Weir " Aces ! " the Ante with a Ripper ! of a C.C. Rider !! ... with Jerry being forced to ( ' gladly ' ) fleece his Bag O' Dead-Tricks right-here ... with a ' High Time ! '. ( I mean ... " Awesome ! " ). So then Weir - Phil & the Drummers ! counter with the B.I.O.D.T.L. !! - truly Grate ! " Bookends " if I may - with the ' Race Is On ' already Magically-appearing in the 2-spot ! And then ... Phil & Weir " Assault ! " - with the ' Promised Land ' ! ... with Garcia basically-saying " Oh Yeah Guys ??! " ..... " DEAL !!! " time. And yeah ... Garcia-Heat ! time - Blammo !! And I mean come-on - as at this point ... Good Ol' Cal Expo is already just starting to get " Hammered ! " by the '86 Dead !! ... here in just their 3rd Show " Ever ! " - at Cal Expo !! And yes - yes-indeed ... as now ' We ' get to talk-about 5/3/86 " Set II " !!!! ... Garcia calls for the Scarlet ! - his chops are straight-up ' On ' and Brent decides " Now, is The-Time ! " to jump on ' The-Bus ' & join This-Party !! As I kind you not ... as this ' Scarlet ! ' rolls so-eloquently ( & awesomely ! ) in to " Fire !! " - I mean ... WHOA !! ... as this my fellow Dead Fans is ... " The Jerry & Brent that you've been looking-for ". And, this also very-much includes Phil ! - straight from the '86 " Phil-Zone !!! " - Yeah !! Then, back to " The-Weir-Zone !!!! " - with a ... you-betcha ... ' Women-Are-Smarter !! ' - cuz " That's-Right !! " ... " Hah !!! ". Then Jerry pulls the Pre-Drums/space lever on the Goin' Down The Road ! - with some noteworthy ' Pre-Drums ' speed - and then ... let's just start the " Rhythm Devils " Chatter !! - because pound per pound & beam hit per beam hit ... this might just be the " Raddest !!! " Drums > Space of the ' Entire ' 1986 Touring-Year ?!? I mean ... I'd have to check & all - but ... Whoa !?! - does it sure ' Feel ' like it - with ' Both ' B.K. & Mick just Drilling ! This-One !! And yeah ... Jerry, Bobby, Phil & Brent hear-it too - as yeah - that's right & it's ' Time ' for ... THE OTHER ONE !!! Needless to try & even ' explain ' this-one as it's just a Jerry > Phil > Bobby " Molten-Lava ! " like attack of Pure ! '86 Grateful Dead ' Live ' Psychedelic HEAT !! and then ... " Of-Course ! " - Weir pulls the cord on the Sugar Mag~Nol~ia !!! ... with all " Hah's ! " In-Gear !! And, I'm talking a Jeep Willys ! flat-out California !! " Burner !!! " here. As Phil shares the ' News ' that like Guitars are broken, Jerry's fingers are frozen, Weir's Guitar is broken ? ( Weir's Mike is On-Fire ! - as that's the Real-Truth ! - Hah !! ), it's Too-Cold, and/or Too-Wet ?! ... and they are going to opt to ' skip ' the " Encore " !! I mean - yeah ... " Classic ! ". As I only even saw Two ( 2 ) ' Skipped-Encore ' Dead Shows in my Touring-Daze ... and that's just Totally-Awesome ! - kind of like a real-rare Billy Ripken Baseball Card, or something ?! And, in pure " Dead-Fashion " ... the Boys ' Open ' the Next-Nights Cal Expo 5/4/86 ' Sunday-Show ' - with a " One More Saturday Night " Show-Opener !!!
