An unusual wooden box, 10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches square, clearly very old, lined with felt (probably not the original felt and needs doing again anyway). The man who sold it to me several years ago knew its history and I wish I'd written it down. I do remember him telling me it was used by the Great Eastern Railway in Essex for transporting water samples in small bottles between wherever they were gathered and the laboratory, which I think he said was at Stratford. The word "Fragile" is beautifully written on the side. Whether the water samples were from locomotives or the Thames I have no idea, but I'm sure someone reading this will know. If it's you' please either tell me or just buy the box. Or both.
