this charming Japanese marquetry inlaid cigarette dispensing box features a top decorated with a scene of Mt. Fuji which includes a a country house and boats on the sea in the foreground and seagulls in the sky.  The sides have dark brown (probably black walnut) bird filled skies above with pale yellow waves.  I believe some of the inlaid elements on the top of the box were shaded in brighter colors that have faded to a pleasant contrasting tones.  The box is cleverly designed so that when the top was slid upwards and downward. one cigarette would be presented through the slot in the top.  I think the box was probably made in Japan c. 1925. The box has a few small repairs and losses but is solid structurally.
