There are various types of wave patterns. Waves that come and go are used as auspicious symbols of eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, and so on. Big waves are called "Tatsunami pattern" or "Aranami pattern" and was popular in the Edo period (1603-1867). The waves come in repeatedly, changing the shape of the rocks and the line of the land, and the pattern is said to express a strong will and a spirit of persistancy that will not give up and will challenge again and again. It is also said to swallow up demons by the strength of the waves.
