Title: Heroes Condition: New Format: CD Description: Heroes is the highly anticipated fourth studio album from popular folk favourites, Banter. Loved for their bold and innovative approach to traditional music, Banter pay tribute to their personal and musical heroes with this remarkable new album.
Heroes showcases Banter's impressive ability to not only rework traditional and contemporary material, but also compose original songs like thought-provoking sea tale Picking a Ship. The band's version of Lay Me Low by War Horse composer, John Tams has already been described by folk legend Martin Simpson as "Better than the original". Similarly, Banter has breathed new life to Pete Coe's classic, Rolling Down The Ryburn and JUNO Award Winning songwriter, David Francey's "Torn Screen Door".
After recently sharing a stage with them, Ralph McTell described Banter as, "Absolutely fantastic! Beautiful harmonies". The other tracks on the album are a similarly engaging collection of both traditional and original songs and tunes that showcase the compositional talents of Banter's creative powerhouse, keyboard player and singer, Nina Zella. Many have compared her voice to that of Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac including BBC Radio 2's Mark Radcliffe.
Formed in 2016 as a three-piece, Banter now continue to explore wider musical possibilities with the addition of their newest member, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Mark Jolley. His fiddle and guitar skills alongside the array of instruments already in the mix from 'swiss army knife', Tim Walker - brass, drums, percussion, vocals - have given the band a cherry on the top of their already generously iced cake. Tim, now nationally recognised for his ever-popular BBC Radio show, Tim Walker's Folk, is also famous for his astonishing ability to play drums and trumpet at the same time!
Jake's Jig, the final track on the album, is performed solo by English Folk melodeon stalwart, Simon Care as a poignant tribute to his life-long friend and musical collaborator Gareth Turner. Turner, who sadly passed away in late 2023, had written the tune early in the duo's career and dedicated it to his son. It became one of Banter's most loved tunes and featured on the band's debut album Yes.
