What is 5-HTP?

5-hydroxytriptan, better known as 5-HTP, is a supplement that some people use in an effort to support their mental health and immune system. 5-HTP is a chemical compound that is naturally produced in your body as it makes serotonin, an important hormone for regulating your mood. Some doctors consider 5-HTP to be the best natural appetite suppressant. 5-HTP is also naturally produced in various plants, including the seeds of griffonia simplicifolia, a West African shrub. 

How Does 5-HTP Work?

The body makes 5-HTP naturally from tryptophan and, then, converts it into serotonin. This neurotransmitter has many powerful effects on the brain. Not only does it improve mood, it also suppresses hunger and helps to curb weight gain. Physicians suggest taking a 5-HTP supplement instead of a serotonin supplement because 5-HTP can access the brain from the bloodstream, while serotonin cannot. 5-HTP Supplements for Weight Loss?
 
A number of sources describe the dietary benefits of consuming 5-HTP to assist weight loss. Claims which can be suggested are scientifically credible. For example, one study used a double-blind crossover study design to evaluate 19 obese females with BMI scores of between 30 and 40. The participants were either given a daily 8mg/kg of body weight 5-HTP supplement, a dose of L-tryptophan or placebo, for 5 weeks. Their diet was otherwise not altered or restricted. They measured the participant’s feeding behaviour using a questionnaire, and their food intake via a 3 day food diary. When they examined their results, they found that 5-HTP both reduced food intake and triggered greater weight loss than placebo. In fact they saw a three times greater rate of effectiveness compared to L-tryptophan and placebo. They concluded that the serotonin increase (whilst making no change to mood state) increased satiety (fullness) rather than reduction in appetite.

5-HTP Supports a Healthy Mood:

5-HTP is the precursor compound to both melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin helps to promote healthy sleep, while serotonin is known to aid in maintaining a good mood. The result is that 5-HTP supplements produce a noticeable mood boost. However, the idea that 5-HTP can be used for depression is highly disputed and has come under severe scientific scrutiny. There are not enough studies to back this claim up, and some scientists argue that it may be detrimental to certain forms of depression. We don’t condone using 5-HTP for any illness or ailment.
