On view here are five portraits of members of the famous German princely family Reuss, executed in the late 1790s by the family's court portraitist Johann Friedrich Leberecht Reinhold (see our web for comparison) in the technique of gouache painting on paper (all of the same size).

The portraits (from left to right) show the following people (according to the authentic old legends on the back of each portrait):

1) Heinrich XI, Prince Reuss-Greiz-Plauen (1722-1800; see our web with his biography). He is depicted with the breast star of the Hungarian St. Stephen Order.

2) Heinrich XV, Prince Reuss-Greiz-Plauen (1751-1825, see our images nr. 23-24), Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal. He is depicted with the breast star of the Bavarian Order of St. Hubertus (all other awards he will obtain much later).

3) Wilhelmine Louise, Princess Reuss-Greiz, née Princess of Nassau-Weilburg (1765-1837; see our web), wife of Heinrich XIII, Prince Reuss-Greiz

4) Heinrich XIX, Prince Reuss-Greiz (1790-1836; see our web), eldest surviving son of Wilhelmine Louise

5) Heinrich XX (1794-1859; see our web), younger brother of the former

Johann Friedrich Leberecht Reinhold (1744 Neustadt an der Orla - 1807 Gera) was a pupil of Johann Gottfried Krippendorf in Zeitz. Already in 1773, he was mentioned as "citizen and painter" of Gera. There, he often worked for Count Heinrich XXX of Reuss-Gera and relating German courts. He worked mainly in watercolor, gouache and pastel, practically known for never signing his paintings. Works of his can be seen in museums of Weimar, Gera etc.
