Original
large-format fold-out 1855 antique lithographed survey map of
Michigan.
-
This map was drawn under the direction of Leander Chapman, Surveyor
General of Michigan, Detroit, and published in a "Message from the
President of the United States" to the first session of the 34th
Congress, Washington, D.C..
-
The image area measures 54.2 x 51 cm [21½" x 20"] and the map depicts
the progress of surveys in the state of Michigan 18 years after it
joined the Union, on a scale of 18 miles to one inch, including plats,
boundaries, survey lines, rivers, and lakes. There is an inset of Isle
Royale.
- The map was lithographed by James Ackerman, 379 Broadway,
New York, and
identifies scattered coastal features, with little detail in the
interior, except for the township and range lines, and the principal
meridian on which the surveys were based.
-
Named features include Grand
Traverse Bay, Lake St. Clair, Saginaw Bay, Kalamazoo River, Copper
Harbor, Lake Superior, Thunder Bay, the Straits of Mackinac (spelled
Mackinaw on the map), Chippewa River, Eagle Harbor, Manitou Island,
Keweenaw Bay (spelled Keewenaw), Rabbit River, Lake Erie, and more.
-
Condition: The map is in very good condition, bright and clean,
with no marks or writing. It is
printed on a lightweight paper, typical of mid-19th century
government fold-outs, and is
blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. It is trimmed close to
the neat line at the lower corner and has an archival repair to a closed tear at the
left edge. It folds to approximately 11" x 9". Please see the scans and feel free to ask any
questions.
