Photograph Notes: The following text is included, "The Fairy Bridge The Fairy Bridge is situated in Aghalunney and crosses a stream which flows into the River Derg The bridge became known as the Fairy Bridge because it was all constructed in one night by the Redcoat army so that their soldiers could get across the burn even when it was flooded. The bridge is built with local stones and is in the form of an arch on each side. The stones are very cleverly built and legend has it that two main stones are keeping the whole bridge intact. This bridge is a good example of the fantastic stone work which the people of the 17th and 18th centuries could produce. This bridge is between 200 and 250 years old and this is the original one. The land was privately owned at the time and was built for soldiers who marched from Strabane to Pettigo which was the main place where hangings were carried out. The official adoption of red coats for the British army was in February 1645 when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordnance. Red was by no means universal at first with grey and blue coats also being worn. There is no known basis for the myth that red coats were favoured because they did not show red blood stains. Blood does in fact show on red clothing as a black stain. Red was also favoured because of the cheapness of red dyes." Pictured here [[[3912571]]]
