Photograph Notes: Each of the villages between Bourne and Heckington, a distance of some 15 miles, almost without exception has a road leading out onto the fen named after its village and terminating at the South Forty Foot Drain. The next village to the south which is Dunsby has Dunsby Drove terminating at South Forty Foot Drain, whereas the next village to the north which is Dowsby has one of the few drove roads which cross it. This is the view from Long Drove on Rippingale Fen. The line of trees in the distance mark Dowsby Drain which runs in a ruler-straight line between Car Dyke and South Forty Foot Drain. The umbellifer in the foreground marks a drainage ditch alongside Long Drove. What is interesting in this remote place is that the Ordnance Survey map marks 'Settlement (site of) to the north and south of Long Drove here. The one to the north would be to the right of the photograph here but does not show up as well on Google Earth as the one to the south.
