Hasegawa 1/72 Mitsubishi Ki-51 Sonia Army Type 99 Assault Plane Model Kit 1980

Introduction:

You will be bidding on a 1/72 scale model kit of the Mitsubishi Ki-51 Sonia light dive bomber. This model kit was produced by Hasegawa and is an example of a 1980s release of the kit. The Mitsubishi Ki-51, also known as the Army Type 99 Assault Plane and by it’s Allied reporting name Sonia, was a land based light dive bomber and recon aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in WW2. The Ki-51 first flew in mid-1939 and was initially deployed against Chinese forces. As the war progressed the type proved to be too slow to live with the speed of more advanced Allied fighters but found a new niche in the CBI theatre where the Ki-51 was often able to operate in the attack role from airstrips too rough for most other aircraft to use. The Ki-51 was also responsible for the last Japanese sinking of a US warship in WW2, USS Bullhead.

This Model Kit:

This model kit is complete and unstarted. All of the parts are either still on the sprues or loose in the original opened bag. Instructions and decals are in good condition except for some typical age yellowing, the box is in good shape and just has some typical minor shelf wear and squashing here and there.

Kit Features and Details:

This kit is moulded in light grey plastic. Details look very good throughout, with very fine engraved panel lines, rivets and other surface details throughout all appropriate external areas. Inside the cockpit you find a very complete look with a pilot seat, gunners stool, side wall interior structural details including spare ammo mags, radios and other equipment, instrument panel, rudder pedals, pilot and gunner figures and a range of other details all included. Other details include detailed double cylinder rows for the engine and a separate cowling, fixed undercarriage with trousers, separate wing mounted guns and under wing bombs on special panniers, as well as a number of other smaller details and fittings to complete the build. Looks like it should build into a great looking model of this early Japanese WW2 light bomber design.
