Pictured and offered for sale is a antique leather knife sheath, scabbard ONLY,  NO KNIFE,  made by a famous saddle maker, D. Mason & Sons of England.   USA imported many saddles and leather goods for the military and Cavalry, along with private use.  This sheath is in a most excellent condition, with leather being soft and pliable.   Two identification stampings exist in the leather, both on the backside (pictured).  It is noteworthy to mention the construction being military construction.

LEATHER STAMPING 1 (pictured) ... appears on the backside of the blade area, stamped within a oval perimeter ....   " LONDON  TRADEMARK  STANDARD "
LEATHER STAMPING 2 (pictured) ... appears on backside of the handle area, stamped " D. MASON & SONS "

TYPE OF BLADE  sheath designed for
1.  7 inch maximum length,   1 in. 1 1/8 in.  maximum blade width
2.  dagger or spearpoint blade,
3.  Blade thickness.   Shown in the last picture is a blade thickness that worked well. That is a 6 in. long, 1 inch wide drop point blade.  Trade knives, like those with pewter bolsters, etc. would work well.   Also, a dagger or spearpoint knife, not being a thick centered blade.  Because of the way the sheath's blade area is made, a thicker blade that becomes thinner as it approaches to tip would also work.    A blade with a 1/8" thickness will work.

The construction of the sheath.  The opening to the blade cavity is wood, covered with leather.   I have experimented with many blades, so feel free to ask, or forward a picture if you are buying for a specific knife you own.  Knowing the Company sold saddles to the Military,  I suspect this scabbard was made to fit a soldiers side or utility type knife, or a spearpoint, dagger blade.

A Knife was used in the last few pictures to aid in knowing what size and style of knife can be used in the sheath.  The thick wood handle on the knife is 4 1/2 inches in length.

BELT LOOP.  The sheath is made to accept a maximum of a 2 in. or 2 1/4 in. WIDE leather belt.
