A Breat of Sultan Mahmud II
regarding Šarena Džamija or Alaca Cami
 in Tetovo, Macedonia 1824

This rare and valuable document, dated 25 Ramazan 1239 (24th May 1824), is an official edict from the Ottoman Empire's Sultan Mahmud II, concerns the mosque Šarena Džamija or Alaca Cami, located near the Pena River in Tetovo, Macedonia.

The document states [that] "there is a mosque, built and funded by late kadi [Muslim judge] Muhyiddin [a religious scholar] in Kalkandelen, Tetova, Köprübaşı [Bridge] street... and [that] there is a hoca [preacher], Bekir, but he is unable of sustaining his job anymore, so he is to be replaced with his brother's son, Hasan Halife ibn Feyzullah."

The document is written in beautiful calligraphy on official Ottoman stationary and features remnants of gold sprinkling on the tugra. The page is made of European watermarked paper with a "tre lune" motif, heavy laid parchment like paper, probably of Italian origin.

At a size of approximately 26 x 63 cm (10¼ x 24¾ in), this document is in good condition for its age, with some creases, stains, and edge tears.The writing is clean and readable. This document would be a wonderful addition to any historical Islamic manuscript collection, and would look great when framed for display.
