Museum Quality Silver Enamel Pair Case Pocket Watch by Binet London 1710

Superb Silver and Enamel Pair Cased Champleve Dial Verge with a Calendar function and a silver Watch cock. By Binet. Pair case / Open Face.

58 mm. Key Wound / Key Set. Circa 1710

Movement - this large and deep gilt, full plate verge fusee movement has square baluster pillars and a large two footed silver verge watch cock.

The cock is decorated with two smaller birds on the upper half and a pair of large mythological bird’s heads on the lower half.

It is also decorated with swirls and a shell motif in the centre.

The movement also features a silver regulator dial and applied pierced work with serpents and flowers.

Around the borders of the movement is a silver trim with a facet cut pattern.

Finally between the two plates there is a pierced silver panel decorated with a mythological sea monster.

The movement is signed “Binet, London”

The movement is in 95% mint condition – some fine scratches only

 

Inner Case – the silver inner case has a hinged bezel.

The movement is wound from the back and is set from the front.

The movement also hinges out from the front. The case has a smooth plain finish and has a makers mark PA with a crown. The case has its original bow and stem, which are free from damage or repair and which still turn a full 360 degrees. The case is in 90% mint condition – there is a light groove from the outer case – this is the original and matching silver outer case.

This superb case is decorated all over with repousse work.

Around the bezel there are swags of flowers.

On the back there is a series of four female profiles, all slightly different.

There are also more raised swags and flowers.

Set into the back there is an enamel panel, which shows a woman ready to take her own life by plunging a large dagger into her breast.There is a courtier weeping behind her.

The enamel has vibrant colours and is in 95% mint condition – the enamel has been fully restored and there are slight nibbles to the enamel around the edges only.

The overall condition of the case is in 95% mint condition – virtually no signs of wear.

Dial – the silver champlevé dial has black enamel numbers and individual silver panels for each of the numbers.

The dial has then been enameled with a soft black enamel.

The centre of the dial is blue steel with a silver finish.

On the whole this a really spectacular dial.
