Developed by the Royal Aircraft Factory, the SE-5A first flew over the Western Front in April 1917, where it was a counter to the then-dominant German Albatros D-III. The plane was armed with a Vickers machine gun to the left of the cockpit and a Lewis gun on the upper wing. By October 1918 2,973 SE5 and 5A airplanes had been delivered.

The SE-5 was flown by a number of British and Canadian aces including Billy Bishop, James McCudden, and Edward Mannock. It was flown on the Western Front and in Mesopotamia, Palestine, and Macedonia.

This kit contains markings for two versions: Royal Flying Corps August 1917 Captain James B. McCudden of No. 56 Squadron B4863 and Royal Air Force June 1918 Lieutenant Elliot White Springs of No. 85 Squadron B6851.
