Rectangular Kutahya Tile

Turquoise glazed ceramic border tile, Kutahya, Turkey

Second Quarter of the 20th Century.

This tile is probably a “reject” from a group of tiles made for the restoration of the Yeşil Türbe or Green Tomb, in Bursa, Turkey. In the late 1930's the restoration project of the famous Iznik tiles of the monument started and necessitated the production of tiles of similar color, shape & size. Though never successfully matching the colors of the originals, similar tiles were produced in Kutahya for the monument at various ateliers.

The tile exhibits surface crackling, discolored areas, stains, a large chip along one edge and minor chips.
