Illustrations Of The Manners, Customs, & Condition Of The North American Indians With Letters and Notes, Written During Eight Years of Travel And Adventure Among The Widest And Most Remarkable Tribes Now Existing. By George Catlin. With Three Hundred And Sixty Coloured Engravings, From The Author's Original PaintingsLondon: Chatto & Windus, Picadilly, 1876. Two crown octavo volumes, uniformly bound in red cloth stamped in gilt and black. First edition of Catlin's classic work to feature illustrations in color, with three maps (one folding) and 180 full page plates, many featuring multiple portraits and depictions in each plate. This is a VG- set. Significant wear and rubbing to corners, which are soft with cloth rubbed through; hinges to both volumes cracked, heavy rubbing and chipping to spine tips, splitting to spine joints (heaviest along lower rear spine joint of Vol II - see photo). Spine cloth midway up Vol I is split, with gilt very dulled to both spines. Internally clean and bright, with small chip out of margin of map of North America (not affecting image itself), but all plates called for present. Please note that the image numbering stops at 312 (final plate) but all 180 plates called for are present. In all, a sound set of a rare work which due to heft and fragility of the bindings almost always shows up in lesser condition and/or rebacked. Though reprinted on numerous occasions through to the early twentieth century, this is the true first London edition from 1876. All reasonable offers considered.
