Up for auction  is this 1920s or 30s hanging 'drop pipe' incandescent mantle gas lamp. This one has good quality brass fittings, and has never been used, came from a long closed plumbing and gasfitter's workshop .

This one incorporates a 14 inch long length of metal spiral flexible pipe, similar to that used on appliances like wash boilers at the time . Similar lamps were marketed under the 'AVIL ' name, Anti Vibration Incandescent Lamp.

One of many designs to overcome the bane of mantle lamps in industrial settings, vibration, which literally shook mantles to pieces. A rare survivor, in good condition. Also allows the lamp to swing clear if knocked rather than snapping off.

Overall length from top mount to nozzle is 26 inches / 65 cms . At the bottom is a high quality No 2 / 'medium' size mantle burner , with a particularly heavy quality brass  shade gallery to accept shades with fitter up to 69 mm max. All 3 securing screws present and working, gas and air mix adjustments present and free .

The brass lever-cock is complete with brass chains and brass pull tabs marked 'on' and 'off' .

Clean overall, not tested, it will be for coal gas so not recommended for use with any currently available gas.
