M. V. Khodikov

306 pages

A large-scale historical study on the issue and circulation of paper money during armed conflicts on the territory of the former Russian Empire. The book reveals the features of the issue of numerous types of banknotes of that period, their circulation among the population and the impact on the “wartime” economy. A separate chapter is devoted to counterfeiting various banknotes.

Money of that time was issued not only by the official authorities, represented first by the Tsarist and Provisional, and then by the Bolshevik governments, but also by the “white” generals Denikin, Wrangel, Yudenich, Admiral Kolchak, Ataman Semenov, Hetman of Ukraine Skoropadsky, Chairman of the Directory Petlyura and many others. Money at that time served as a kind of manifesto of a particular government, which was reflected in the symbolism of the images on banknotes. The book shows a motley picture of the emission policy of the central government and numerous military and civilian governments.
