Matchbox 1/72 Scale Vought F4U-4 Corsair Model Kit 1973 (Started / Modified)

Introduction:

You will be bidding on a 1/72 scale model kit of the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair. This kit was produced by Matchbox in 1973. The Corsair was a highly capable carrier based fighter designed by Vought and built by Vought and Goodyear during World War 2. The distinctive gull wing designed fighter was one of the finest carrier based aircraft to serve during the conflict, matching or outclassing all contemporary Japanese designs it would meet in combat. The Corsair was used extensively by the US Navy, Marines and their allies in the Pacific Theatre in WW2 and the Korean War with great success. This kit represents the F4U-4 variant which was the last development to see service in WW2, fitted with a powerful engine and 4 bladed propeller.

This Model Kit:

This model kit has been started and slightly modified. The wing halves have been joined, some parts such as wheels and prop have been pre painted neatly, and the chin section of the cowling ring has been cut away to be used as part of a reshaped nose using a cowling from a different corsair kit too (see photos, that’s the best I can explain it). Some other parts from other Corsair kits are also in the box along with all of the original Matchbox corsair parts, I think this was an attempt to improve the overall accuracy and detail of the original kit with parts from another and some scratch building. The original stand is included, as are the instructions and decals which are in great condition, as is the box, especially for its age.

Kit Features and Details:

This kit is moulded in 2 colours in the classic Matchbox manner, dark blue-grey for one sprue and light blue plastic for the other. Details include engraved panel lines and surface detail throughout all appropriate external areas. In the cockpit details are quite basic and just include a seat and a decent looking pilot figure to fill the small opening under the single piece canopy. Other features include a detailed undercarriage which can be built raised or lowered and includes an arrestor hook built into the retractable rear wheel bay, wing root radiator internal details, engine cylinder details etc are also provided in addition to a number of other smaller parts and details. Construction is quite basic and it should produce a decent looking scale model of this distinctive WW2 and Korean War naval fighter design. As mentioned this one has had some work done already including the beginnings of some modification for eventual accuracy improvement.
