Airfix 1/72 RAF Rescue Launch 63ft Powerboat Type 2 Whaleback Model Kit 1978 First Release

Introduction:

You will be bidding on a 1/72 scale model kit of a 63ft Type 2 Whaleback Rescue Launch boat. This model was produced by Airfix and is an example of a 1978 first release of the tooling. The Type Two 63ft HSL was built by the British Power Boat Company to serve as high speed rescue launches for sea rescue by the RAF and other organisations during the Second World War. Initially designed in 1937, the type began reaching RAF marine units in 1940. Maximum speed was a respectable 36 knots and the type was defended by aircraft style clear turrets and other weaponry in the role. The type was responsible saving the lives of many ditched aircrews throughout the World War Two in the hand of the RAF Air Sea Rescue Service who’s motto was “the sea shall not have them”.

This Model Kit:

This kit is complete and unstarted. All of the parts are still sealed in the original bag. Instructions and decals are in good condition, the box is a bit squashed and has some other typical minor shelf wear here and there too.

Kit Features and Details:

This kit is moulded in grey plastic. Details are pretty good, and construction starts with the shallow draft lower hull attaching to two halves then topped by a full length deck piece. Details are a mix of engraved and raised panels and details throughout all appropriate visible areas and there are a large number of smaller details to be added that busy up the decks nicely and include things such as rescue equipment including stowed and inflated dinghies, rails and ropes, ladders etc and defensive armament in twin turrets as well as a rear deck gun with mantle. Other areas such as the deck house, funnels, and a whole range of other operational items and equipment are also provided, it has clear portholes where appropriate, triple screws and rudders on the underside and plenty more. Also included are a compliment of 4 crew figures to populate the deck with and bring some life to the model. Should build into a nicely detailed scale model of an important boat design from British Naval history.
