Description:
Please find for offer a fine quality cut silhouette family group painting, by H & J Walter, dating to circa 1840. Watercolour on paper with gilt highlighted details and presented in a period rosewood veneered frame (glazed). This is a lovely painting that depicts three young children, according to the information verso they are William Harison – with hoop, Kate Harison – seated, and Cissie Jane Harrison. These are the children of Rev. John Harison, vicar of Bishopstone, Wiltshire. Further information on the back reads: “Marked verso”H & J Walter, Profilist, London”, in oval stamp”. I have not examined the painting out of the frame to see if this is accurate.
H & J Walter were brothers, Henry Walter (1816-1869) and Jonas Walter (1820 – 1888). Few works by the brothers are recorded but there is a thorough essay by McKechnie (author of British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860) detailing their lives and later career as photographers. The essay can be found on the artist index page of the “profilesofthepast” website.
