This is a lovely and refined Antique Old American Folk Art Trompe L'oeil Still Life Corn Oil Painting on Wood, depicting the trompe l'oeil still life scene of the two hanging ears of corn. This piece is strongly reminiscent of still life works by the esteemed mid - late 19th century painter, John F. Peto (1854 - 1907.) The intricate details in this artwork are simply amazing, and reflect the hand of a talented, likely known and listed artist. Signed with a monogram and dated: "B.G. 1908 (?)" in the lower right corner. Approximately 6 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 9 1/4 x 18 3/8 inches. Good condition for well over a century of age and storage, with heavy scuffing, edge wear, and material loss to the antique gesso wood frame. Additionally, there is some minor soiling and speckles of paint loss to the painted surface (please see photos.) Acquired from an old private collection in Los Angeles, California, but I suspect that this artwork originates from the Northeastern United States.
