Photograph Notes: In the foreground are the re-roofed Cottages 1 to 6 and Cottage 7, the first of the roofless modern houses. In the middle distance, left to right, the Factor's House (white), the Visitor's Ablutions Block (grey box), the army gymnasium (green Nissen hut), the single storey accommodation blocks and workshops (flat grey roofs), and the Electricity-generating Station (pale grey with a modern sloping roof). The bright blue containers are outside The Manse, during works to return this building from the army to the National Trust for Scotland for use as accommodation for the warden, shop, and so on. In the distance is the Feather Store in Gun Meadow. The old joke was that the soldiers who formed the Kilda Generating Board (KGB) had Russian connections, hence their yard was (and still is) known as Red Square.
