In the Spring of 2007 a mass shooting occurred on the Virginia Tech campus which resulted in the loss of life of 32 people.

The following Spring the New York Yankees played an exhibition game vs the Virginia Tech Hokies mens baseball team on March 18, 2008.

The game was easily won by the professional Yankees team with a score of 11-0. The Yankees contributed $1 Million to The Hokie Memorial Spirit Fund, created to cover grief counseling, memorials and other costs for the victims and their families.
