I tested the droid and it works fine, see video.

You would need to download Sphero Edu app on your phone.

Skip the registry step by scrolling down and select start coding. 

On the bottom menu select "Drive"

Select robot type - BB-8

Tap the droid to wake it up and click the Connect long light-grey button

The phone will connect to the droid and you'll be able to drive it.
