Vinegar valentines were a type of comic valentine that became popular in the mid-1800s. They were poorly printed and made from low quality materials, and were usually sold for about one penny. Vinegar valentines were also known as penny dreadfuls and comic valentines. They were sent anonymously to insult the recipient.
