Antique Hand Carved White Marble Chinese War Horse Guard Statue – Free Standing & Mountable, 14” x 14” with 7” x 5” Marble Base.

Beautiful antique Chinese War Horse Guard Statue – traditionally represents strength, courage & dominance. Second only to the Dragon in potency within ancient Chinese mythology.
Free Standing & Mountable – Stands on any flat surface (table, desk, shelf, ect.) with its 7” x 5” attached marble base AND is also mountable with its two (2) 3/4” mount holes on the bottom of the base. (mounting hardware not included)
Indoor/Outdoor – place in your home or garden or mount it on or near your front gate or front door as a symbol of strength and status.
Dimensions: Horse + Base - 14” H x 14” L x approx. 6” W, Base Only - 7” L x 5” W, Two (2) Mount Holes – 3/4” diameter holes spaced 1-3/4” apart. Photos showing these measurements are available upon request.

TIME PERIOD:

The statue is unmarked / unbranded. Due to carved marble being a technique used for centuries, it is difficult to date. However, we were able to spot a couple clues that lead us to estimate this statue to be between 80-150 years old. We have seen a few similar style Chinese War Horse marble statues dated to the 1950s or 1960s, however they tend to be smaller with a more contemporary look. This is a rare piece, thus minimal information is available. Based on our own experience with antiques and the estimates of a couple local antique experts we consulted, we estimate this statue was created sometime in the late 19th-century. Please note, this is an educated estimate only and is not set in stone, so to speak. If you have expertise in Chinese antiques and are able to provide additional information or spot clues that could help narrow the date range, please reach out! We would love to hear from you! THE TANG EMPIRE & THE HORSE IN CHINESE MYTHOLOGY: A Brief Overview:

In Chinese mythology, the Horse symbolizes pure male strength (Yang) and was at first regarded as being even more potent than the dragon.

Emperor Wu of Han "believed these horses could transport him to heaven" and gave them a name: "tian ma" or "heavenly horse.”

The statue depicts a certain style of Chinese war horse from the Tang dynasty (/tɑːŋ/[tʰǎŋ]; Chinese: 唐朝, or the Tang Empire.

The Tang Empire was an imperial dynasty of China that ruled from 618 to 907, with an interregnum between 690 and 705. It was preceded by the Sui dynasty and followed by the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Historians generally regard the Tang as a high point in Chinese civilization, and a golden age of cosmopolitan culture. Tang territory, acquired through the military campaigns of its early rulers, rivaled that of the Han dynasty.

CONDITION: Very Good • Preowned

Some minor damage on tail (photo #16) and a small puncture on the top of the saddle (photo #17). No other damage. This statue has been mounted outside in the past, yet only shows some minimal signs of ware – mostly on the base. The bottom of the base shows obvious signs of mounting ware, yet no damage. Marble holds up very well amongst the elements so overall, this antique carved white marble statue is in really great condition. Please use the zoom feature on the photos to carefully inspect the item’s exact condition and details. The color variation between the outdoor & indoor photos are accurate. As with all marble, it can come across as bright white or a dull grayish white depending on lighting.
