Two piece hollow copper medal produced by the republican party for the 1868 election in support of General US Grant. There are very few surviving shells in either silver coated brass or copper for the 1868 election or really any of this time period because of the fragile nature of both shell medals and button shells. The very first raised relief button shells showed up in the 1840 election by the WH Harrison campaign. The largest collection of US Grant campaign shells resides at the Ford Collection.

It's very difficult to find historical price information on this unique piece of political memorabilia. The Ford collection of course has one of these but they rarely sell anything. There is  supporting evidence of Grant shells selling for about $800 on average. This particular piece has been drilled to hang on a necklace or watch chain and it has been glued or painted with an unknown substance to keep the two halves together. Other than that, it is in amazing condition considering its age and fragility.
