Highly Illuminated Military Officer’s Letter to His Superior Reporting the Taking of a Fort

18th-19th Century, Mesopotamia

Subject: Obviously written for an important person. The document is a letter to a governor or local ruler reporting a taking of a fort. With the officer’s seal affixed to the bottom.

The borders are richly embellished with gold leaf and the calligraphy is sprinkled with gold.

Size:~215 x 470 mm (~ 8.5 x 18.5 in)

Paper: Light toned laid paper. Not watermarked.


The document is in very good condition. The beautiful calligraphy is clear and legible, with
some minor smudges and toning. It exhibits minor edge wear and a small hole near the top and crease or fold marks. 

The lustrous gold is mostly intact.

A worthy addition to any Islamic art collection.
