Beautiful hand crafted Left handed medieval Fiddle (Vielle) made by Michael Stibane and based on one of the two recovered from Henry VIII flagship the “Mary Rose” which sank in 1545.

The Body and neck are carved from a single block of spruce, with a spruce top, beech fingerboard, tailpiece and pegs. This was purchased recently and is in excellent condition.

This particular vielle has a sound post and bass bar fitted to improve the sound, but it’s arguable whether these were fitted or not, as no fully surviving original models exist. It is also fitted with modern violin strings and modern fine tuners, however, these could be removed and the violin strings replaced with gut for a more historically accurate sound.

A Veille should be tuned, as the bridge is flatter to allow more than one string to be bowed at once and act as a drone. The suggested tuning is G (d5 g4 d4 G3) or D (d5 a4 d4 A3).

The package also includes a vintage traditional wooden coffin case (with a modified interior) and a basic violin bow.

Great for early music enthusiasts and this instrument produces a wonderful sound
